Michael Schumacher capitalizes on shunt at the start that weeds out the field, opening the door for him to emerge with his 2nd straight victory in Monaco.
An accident in the 1st corner at the start send multiple drivers from the front positions into backup cars and the back of the field for a re-start. The re-start results in a series of stop-and-go penalties for drivers jumping the re-start.
The end result leaves Schumacher, in his Benetton, competing with Williams' Damon Hill. When Hill is forced to pit, while holding a :15 lead, Schumacher claims the lead winning the strategy battle. Ferrari's Gerhard Berger takes the 3rd spot on the podium.
