Hakkinen is in cruise control after an early collision forces a re-start of the race. Despite losing a wing, and needing a repair after the melee, Mclaren teammate David Coulthard is able to charge through the field with his Mercedes power to finish 2nd to Hakkinen.

Michael Schumacher takes 3rd place after Ferrari teammate Eddie Irvine slows to allow a pass for Schumacher to gain maximum points.
