A first lap collision collects 4 cars, bringing a red flag and forcing a re-start with 2 drivers switching to backup cars. Then Mika Hakkinen joins the others on the sidelines after a gearbox failure. A throttle drops David Coulthard's Mclaren from the race, removing the 2 dominant cars, opening the way for Schumacher.

Benetton's Giancarlo Fisicella takes 2nd with Schumacher's teammate Eddie Irvine claiming 3rd.
