Mika Hakkinen captures the World Championship as Ferrari and Michael Schumacher's good fortunes go away.

After stalling on the initial attempted start, Schumacher goes to the back of the field, but finally retires with a punctured rear tire after working his way back up to third place. Hakkinen's Mclaren bests Ferrari's Eddie Irvine, wrapping up his 1st World title. Mclaren teammate David Coulthard takes 3rd place as the Mercedes-powered Mclaren team captures the constructor's championship.
