With teams juggling strategies and tire choices due to intermitent rain, a pair of strong contenders spin out, another falls out with engine failure, and title contenders get shuffled back into the field. Hebert claims the lead when leader Giancarlo Fisichella spins out in his Benetton.

Hebert, starting from the 14th position takes the win, ahead of Prost's Jarno Trulli and Hebert's Stewart teammate Rubens Barrichello, who had started 15th. Williams' Ralf Schumacher finishes fourth, leading Mclaren's Mika Hakkinen. Marc Gene finishes 6th, scoring a rare point for Minardi.
