Mika Hakkinen spins off while leading, and then David Coulthard struggles with the pressure against Schumacher, and goes off course several times, losing necessary time to catch and overtake the Ferrari after an exchange of pits puts the slower Ferrari in front.

Coulthard does take second ahead of Stewart's Rubens Barrichello.
