Rubens Barrichello scores his 1st career victory on a wet and wacky day in Hockenheim.

Barrichello and Ferrari make the correct call on tires when a brief rain fades, and Mika Hakkinen and Mclaren make the wrong call and switch to wet weather tires. Timing is everything as Barrichello's victory lap is under steady rain. Meanwhile, his heralded teammate Michael Schumacher is bounced from the race in a first lap collision with Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella.

Mclaren's David Coulthard finishes 3rd after having the misfortune of being unable to take advantage of track position when a fan runs out onto the course causing Coulthard to run behind a safety car.
