Race Notes

Juan Pablo Montoya makes a dominant debut at the Brickyard.

Montoya leads 167 laps, becoming the 1st rookie winner since Graham Hill in 1966. Montoya, the defending CART champion, cruises by the competition as Team Ganassi returns to Indianapolis after skipping the event as part of the CART/IRL split.

After rains causes a prolonged delay of the start, Montoya finds himself in 1st while polesitter Greg Ray hits the wall earlier. His departure leaves Montoya to fend off challenges from teammate Jimmy Vasser, past winners Buddy Lazier and Eddie Cheever, Jr. Lazier takes 2nd place with A.J. Foyt Racing teammates Eliseo Salazar and Jeff Ward are 3rd and 4th.
