Alexander Rossi makes for an unlikely winner in the Indianapolis 500's 100th running.

Fuel/pit strategy pays off for the rookie as he's able to nurse his car to the end plus 1/2 of a victory lap before running out of gas, while the other contenders all fall short, requiring a stop-and-go stop for a splash of fuel to get them to the end.

Rossi, with minimal experience in IndyCar after spending his racing life working up the European feeder systems before making his F1 debut in 2015 with backmarker Manor, had enough margin to coast home and become the 1st rookie winner at the Brickyard since Helio Castroneves in 2001. Rossi brought his Andretti Autosport Honda home in front of teammate Carlos Munoz.
