Villeneuve wins flag-to-flag after a controversial start. Villeneuve overshoots his grid spot amid confusion over the start, so runs much of the race under threat of penalty. However, the end result is a fine, and there field is no match for the Ferraris as Villeneuve and teammate Jody Schectker cruise.

Villeneuve wins 29+ seconds ahead of Scheckter. who finishes another 30 seconds ahead of Williams' Alan Jones. Jones wins a 4-way battle for the position, with Lotus' Mario Andretti claiming with 4th.
