Race Notes

Nelson Piquet dominates the streets of Long Beach.

Piquet leads from the pole in his Brabham, avoiding the shunts that thinned the field, and held a firm grasp on the race to capture his 1st Grand Prix victory. Arrows' Riccardo Patrese claims 2nd, 49.2 seconds adrift of the winner. Emerson Fittipaldi is the only other driver on the lead lap, claiming 3rd.

An accident takes out Williams' Alan Jones while running 2nd, and Ferrari's Gilles Villeneuve is forced to retire with a gearbox failure. Ensign's Clay Regazzoni collides with a sidelined car and ends up hitting the barriers hard, resulting in injuries that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
