Game Notes

#4 Hurricanes upset the #1 Cornhuskers 31-30 with a dramatic finish.

Ken Calhoun breaks up Turner Gill's passing attempt for a 2-point conversion and win and national championship. Calhoun's deflection in the final minutes and Miami's subsequent recovery of the onside kick gives Miami its 1st National Championship. Nebraska had pulled within 1 on Jeff Smith's 24-yard TD run, capping a 4th quarter comeback from a 31-17 deficit by the Cornhuskers.

Nebraska's rally caps a game of chase as Miami jumps out to a 17-0 lead in the 1st quarter, and then answers with 2 TDs in the 3rd quarter after the Cornhuskers tie it. Bernie Kosar airs it out, setting an Orange Bowl-record with 300 yards passing and tossing 2 TDs to Glenn Dennison in the 1st quarter.

Alonzo Highsmith and Albert Bentley add TD runs in the 3rd quarter for Miami. Eddie Brown catches 6 passes for 115 yards.

Nebraska answers with Gill's 172 yards passing and Mike Rozier's 147 yards rushing before an ankle injury sidelines him in the 2nd half.
