Game Notes

#10 Hurricanes slip by the #1 Tigers 20-18 in the Kickoff Classic.

Miami goes ahead on Greg Cox's 25-yard FG w/ 6:08 left after the teams traded the lead three times in the final quarter, and then Bernie Kosar completes a 40-yard pass on 3rd down, late, allowing the Hurricanes to run out the clock and upset Auburn. Auburn's previous possession ends when Brent Fullwood can't handle a pitch and Julio Cortes recovers for Miami.

The Tigers lead 15-14 entering the final quarter before Cox's 1st FG gives Miami the edge, however, Robert McGinty's 3rd FG of the night puts Auburn up 18-17. The Hurricanes had controlled much of the 1st half on the strength of 2 TD passes from Bernie Kosar to Stanley Shakespeare. However, a safety and a FG late in the 2nd quarter cuts the gap to 14-12.

Kosar throws for 329 yards, with Eddie Brown catching 8 for 157 yards. Alonso Highsmith rushes for 140 yards, outshining Auburn's Bo Jackson, who is 'held' to 96 yards.
