Game Notes

Jaguars escape with a 15-10 win over the Browns.

Jacksonville prevails after a controversial replay, near beer bottle riot, and a do-over on the finish. After beer bottles and debris result in the game being called with :48 left, the teams return to finish the game on order from Paul Tagliabue. The chaotic ending comes after a replay review correctly reverses a 4th-down completion for a Cleveland 1st down at the 12 in the final minute. However, the replay review came only after the Browns had spiked the ball to stop the clock. Only after that play is it decided to review the previous play contrary to all known replay procedures.

The controversial ending follows an even more disappointing effort by Cleveland's offense. Trailing 9-0, the Browns get their only TD when Anthony Henry picks off Mark Brunell and returns it 97 yards for a TD. A Brunell fumble gives Cleveland the ball at the Jaguars' 13 in the 4th quarter, but the Browns go backwards and settle for a FG and 12-10 deficit rather than capitalizing for a go-ahead TD. The Browns manage just 166 yards prior to the final drive.

Brunell throws for 202 yards and 1 TD, to Jimmy Smith, and Stacey Mack rushes for 115 yards and catches 3 passes for 24 yards.
