Game Notes

Oilers edge the Steelers 20-17 on MNF.

Houston forges a 1st-place tie with Pittsburgh on the back of Earl Campbell and its defense. Campbell rushes for 109 yards, becoming the 1st player to top the 100-yard mark against the Steelers since the 1978 season. Meanwhile, the Houston defense thwarts Terry Bradshaw until the Oilers are able to open a 13-3 lead.

Dante Pastorini hits Ken Burrough with a 25-yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter for the only score of the half as the defenses control the contest. Toni Fritsch counters a FG by Matt Bahr, with 2 of his own.

After Lynn Swann scores on a 9-yard reverse early in the 4th quarter, the Oilers drive back for a 4-yard TD run by Rob Carpenter. Bradshaw hits John Stallworth with a 34-yard TD pass, but the Oilers prevail after a controversial onside kick ruling.
