Game Notes

Bengals hold off the Steelers for a 17-16 win.

Cincinnati stretches out a 17-0 lead in the 1st half, then withstands a 2nd half rally by Pittsburgh, for its 1st win at Three Rivers Stadium, and first season sweep of the Steelers. Pittsburgh had scored on its 1st 3 possessions of the 2nd half, but a missed PAT and then a failed 41-yard FG attempt by Matt Bahr w/ :10 doom the Steelers.

The Steelers fumble 5 times in the 1st half, losing just one. But most everything else goes Cincinnati's way in the 1st half. Charles Alexander, rushes for 72 yards on 12 carries, and gives the Bengals a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter with a 1-yard TD run. Pete Johnson gets behind Jack Ham in the 2nd to score on a 28-yard TD pass from Ken Anderson.

Fortunes change in the 2nd half when Mel Blount picks off Anderson on the 1st series, setting up a 1-yard TD run by Russell Davis. However, the PAT is missed, Terry Bradshaw hits Jim Smith with a 13-yard TD pass on the next series cutting the lead to 17-13. Bahr's 35-yard FG on the next possession closes the gap to 1.
