Game Notes

Oilers hang on to beat the Patriots 38-34 on MNF.

Greg Stemrick picks off Steve Grogan in the final minute to stop New England's comeback, following a 15-yard TD pass from Grogan to Russ Francis with just over a minute left and a successful onside kick by the Patriots. Grogan throws for 374 yards and 3 TDs, but its not enough to match Earl Campbell's 130 yards and 2 TDs for the Oilers.

Houston puts the Patriots in a 24-6 hole in the 1st half by forcing New England field attempts while converting on its own scoring opportunities and producing an improbable one when Ken Stabler's pass bounces off the hands of 2 defenders into Mike Barber's waiting hands to produce a 79-yard TD pass.

New England rallies in the 3rd quarter as the Patriots pull within 24-20 on Grogan's 39-yard TD to Harold Jackson. But Houston takes over in the 4th with Campbell grinding out yards and time to restore the Oilers' control of the game.
