Game Notes

Raiders outslug the Steelers in a 45-34 shootout on MNF.

Jim Plunkett throws for 247 yards and 3 long TDs as Oakland takes advantage of a depleted and mistake-prone Pittsburgh team. The Steelers commit 10 penalties and 3 costly turnovers, while Terry Bradshaw is knocked out several times, joining Lynn Swann, John Stallworth and Franco Harris on the sideline, helping to offset 467 yards total offense by Pittsburgh.

The Steelers had jumped out to a 17-7 lead, but after a 1-yard TD run by Mark van Eeghan, Rod Martin converts a fumble into a 34-yard TD return, and then Plunkett hits Morris Bradshaw with a 45-yard TD pass for a 28-17 lead.

Pittsburgh answers with a 13-yard TD pass from Cliff Stoudt to Jim Smith at the end of the 1st half, but Oakland starts the 2nd half with a 56-yard TD pass from Plunkett to Cliff Branch. The Steelers are able to close to within 35-34 before the Raiders put them away with 2 long drives in the 4th quarter capped by a 34-yard TD pass from Plunkett to Branch and a 36-yard FG by Chris Bahr.

Branch catches 5 passes for 123 yards. Pittsburgh gets 384 combined passing yards from Bradshaw and Stoudt, with Smith and Theo Bell each topping 100 yards receiving.
