Chargers steal Bills' upset thunder for 20-14 win.

San Diego snatches away Buffalo's hopes with a quick strike as Dan Fouts hits little-used Ron Smith for a 50-yard TD pass with 2:08 to play. Moments earlier, Smith let a pass slip thru his hands only to be intercepted deep in Bills' territory as the Chargers battle their own mistakes to overcome a 14-3 halftime deficit. Each team turns it over 3 times, with Buffalo also failing to convert on 2 FG attempts to extend its lead.

Glen Edwards picks Joe Ferguson, for the 2nd time, in the final minutes to seal the win. Ferguson throws for 180 yards and a 9-yard TD pass to Frank Lewis that gives the Bills a 14-3 lead. However, Ferguson, limping badly on an injured ankle, struggles to convert chances into points.

Fouts is able to rally the Chargers in the 2nd half, hitting Charlie Joiner with a 9-yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter, with Rolf Benirschke adding a FG in the 4th quarter to cut the deficit to 14-13. Fouts throws for 314 yards with John Jefferson catching 7 passes for 102 yards.
