Race Notes

Jeff Gordon claims his 1st Daytona 500 title after a late scramble.

Gordon becomes the youngest winner of NASCAR's marquee event at age 25 after narrowly staying on the lead lap and then clawing his way back to the lead pack of 6 cars in the final stages. Gordon's passes of Dale Earnhardt for 2nd place sets up the late drama as Earnhardt brushes the wall and gets hit from behind taking, Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett and Ernie Irvan out of contention and setting the stage for a 10-lap sprint to the finish.

In the end, Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports teammates Terry Labonte and Ricky Craven line up, and surge past Bill Elliott to grab the top 3 spots and hold on as a final caution results in the race being completed under a yellow flag. Elliott finishes 4th.
