Race Notes

Jeff Gordon wins a late duel with the Intimidator to capture victory.

Gordon fends off Dale Earnhardt, bidding for consecutive wins in NASCAR's marquee event, in the final laps after they combined to overtake the Rusty Wallace on lap 183 of 200. Wallace had dominated the race leading 107 laps, but Gordon's daring move to overtake Wallace as the field goes 3-wide puts him in front with drafting help from Earnhardt.

Earnhardt makes several attempts to get under and by Gordon, but finishes 2nd while Gordon wins his 2nd in the event and takes home a $1-million bonus. Kenny Irwin finishes a career-best 3rd followed by Mike Skinner, who had dueled Wallace for much of the race. Wallace finishes 8th after failing to pit for fresh tires while the top finishers did.
