Paul Tracy dominates the streets of Houston.

Tracy claims the lead after championship leader and race leader Juan Pablo Montoya collides with a disabled car and is forced to retire. Tracy then sprints away from the field, and then gambles on making it to the end without a 2nd pit stop.

Tracy's Team Green teammate Dario Franchitti overcomes an early tire problem to take second place remaining in the championship battle. However, Franchitti is unable to pull away from 3rd place Michael Andretti preventing the team from swapping Tracy and Franchitti to aid Franchitti's championship hopes.
