Montoya claims his 2nd straight win, following up his 1st win, on the streets of Long Beach, with his 1st on an oval in his rookie season. Montoya duels with Helio Castroneves in a 2-car battle for the lead through much of the race before Castroneves spins, and then later hits the wall. Montoya leads 210 of the 225 laps.

P.J. Jones claims 2nd place ahead of Paul Tracy.
