Game Notes
Luis Tiant starts it and finishes it for the Red Sox, who open with a 6-0 win over the Reds.
Tiant becomes the 1st pitcher to toss a complete game in the World Series since 1971, allowing just 5 hits and 2 walks. It's also El Tiante that starts Boston's 6-run 7th that decides the game.
Tiant leads off the 7th with a hit to left with one of his typical wild swings. He navigates the bases, managing to avoid getting picked off before scoring on Carl Yastrzemski's bases-loaded single for the 1st run. Carlton Fisk draws a bases-loaded walk to force in the next run, and then Rico Petrocelli delivers the big hit driving in 2 with a single to left for a 4-0 lead.
Starting pitchers:
Reds - Don Gullett
Red Sox - Tiant
Winning pitcher: Tiant
Losing pitcher: Gullett
