Game Notes

In the end, its defense and a 'quiet' offense that prevails for the NL All-Stars in a 7-6 shootout.

MVP Dave Parker makes a pair of late-inning strikes from rightfield to throw runners out at 3rd base and home plate, and then Lee Maszilli breaks a tie with a bases-loaded walk against Ron Guidry in the 9th. The NL managed the rally on 4 walks. Mazzilli had tied the game with a pinch-hit HR to lead off the 8th against Jim Kern. Kern was responsible for the 1st 3 walks in the 9th.

Parker throws out Jim Rice trying to stretch a double into a triple to lead off the 7th, and then throws out Brian Downing, trying to score from 2nd, to end the 8th inning.

Offense had dominated the early innings with the National League scoring twice in the top of the 1st and then AL answering with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st, highlighted by Fred Lynn's 2-run HR. The NL All-Stars draw even with a run in the 2nd, go ahead with another in the 3rd, but the American League takes the lead back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.
