Game Notes

American League All-Stars beat up on the Nationals 13-3 at Comiskey Park to end the NL's dominance.

Fred Lynn delivers the 1st Grand Slam in All-Star Game history to break the game open as part of a 7-run 3rd inning by the American League. Both teams trade errors and runs in the 1st inning, and the AL goes up on Robin Yount's Sac Fly in the 2nd.

The game breaks open after Atlee Hammaker replaces starter Mario Soto in the 3rd. Jim Rice leads off with a HR and Dave Winfield and Rod Carew deliver RBI singles to extend the lead to 5-1 before Lynn's blast. Winfield collects 3 hits for the AL, but Lynn takes the MVP honors.

Boston's Carl Yastrzemski and Cincinnati's Johnny Bench make their final All-Star appearances, eaching going hitless in a pinch hit at-bat as part of their farewell tours, having announced retirement plans earlier in the year.
