New York goes up 3-2 when an infield single by Wally Backman and an errant pickoff throw by Charlie Kerfeld sets up Gary Carter's game-winning single in the 12th.

The game had been a pitchers' duel as Nolan Ryan and Dwight Gooden lock up in a game of posting zeroes. Ryan doesn't allow a hit until Darryl Strawberry tags him with a solo HR with 1 out in the 5th. Ryan allows just that hit and a single to Keith Hernandez in the 7th as he goes 9 innings, allowing just the 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 12.

Gooden does his part by scattering 9 hits over 10 innings, allowing just 1 run in the 5th when Andy Ashby doubles and later scores on a groundout by Bill Doran.
