Game Notes

Mets make an improbable comeback to win 6-5 over the Red Sox in the 10th inning, capping one of the most unusual games in World Series history.

Roger Clemens mows down New York hitters in the early innings as Boston takes a 2-0 lead against Bob Ojeda, looking to capture Boston's 1st title since 1918. However, New York rallies to tie it in the 5th when Ray Knight drives in a run and then scores an unearned run. But Knight is fitted for the goat role when his throwing error in the 7th sets up the go-ahead run for Boston.

The Mets force extra innings when Gary Carter's Sac Fly in the 9th ties it. The Red Sox appear unfazed when Dave Henderson leads off the 10th with a solo HR, and then they tack on an insurance run off Rick Aguilera. But Boston's title dreams turn to nightmare in the bottom of the 10th. Calvin Schiraldi retires the 1st 2 batters before Carter singles, and Kevin Mitchell follows with a single. Knight drops a single in to score Carter. Bob Stanley's wild pitch allows Mitchell to score the tying run. One strike from going to the 11th, Mookie Wilson hits a weak grounder down the first base line but the ball finds its way through Bill Buckner's legs and Knight scores the winning run.
