Game Notes

Dodgers' stirring rally, A's devastating failure as Los Angeles takes the opener 5-4.

The Dodgers rally with 2 outs in the 9th against Oakland's all-star closer Dennis Eckersly as Mike Davis draws a walk and then Kirk Gibson follows with his memorable game-winning home run and over-acted limp around the bases. The A's had appeared headed for victory behind Dave Stewart's start and Jose Canseco's 2nd inning Grand Slam off Tim Belcher.

Stewart goes 8 innings, scattering 6 hits and 3 runs, while Los Angeles patches together its staff using 4 pitchers, but stranding 10 Oakland runners as the A's go just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, wasting chances to put the Dodgers away.

Starting pitchers:
A's - Stewart
Dodgers - Tim Belcher

Winning pitcher: Alejandro Pena
Losing pitcher: Eckersly
