Game Notes

A's get life from a big blast by Mark McGwire, to beat the Dodgers 2-1.

McGwire's solo HR in the bottom of the 9th settles a pitching duel to give Oakland a spark in the series after dropping the 1st 2 games in Los Angeles. McGwire's shot off Jay Howell comes after Franklin Stubbs' 2-out double scores Jeff Hamilton in the 5th to tie it.

Ron Hassey's RBI single in the 3rd had been the A's only offense against a solid, extended bullpen outing for the Dodgers, who were forced to go to their relievers after John Tudor departs with an injured arm after just 4 outs. Los Angeles gets 6 2/3 innings of 4-hit, 1-run relief from Tim Leary and Alejandro Pena. However, Oakland's pen is equally tough behind starter Bob Welch, as Greg Caderet, Gene Nelson and Rick Honeycutt give up just 2 hits in 4 innings.
