Avery strikes out 9 batters while blanking Pittsburgh for 8 1/3 innings on 6 hits before departing with Bobby Bonilla on base following a leadoff double. Alejendro Pena dances around a wild pitch before closing out the Pirates to tie the series at 1-1.

Zane Smith nearly matches Avery, but Mark Lemke delivers a 2-out RBI double to cash in on David Justice's leadoff single in the top of the 6th. The doubles by Lemke and Bonilla are the lone extra-base hits in the game.
