Game Notes

The Yankees slip by the Red Sox 4-3 as baseball's Cold War reaches new lows of stupidity and self-indulgence.

After Pedro Martinez goes head-hunting and then exercises his ego and stupidity with theatrics, Manny Ramirez takes exception to a pitch from Roger Clemens that was high but not tight, resulting in the benches clearing, and 72-year-old Don Zimmer challenging Martinez, who then throws the New York coach to the ground. In short the type of ego-flexing that is unfortunately deemed part of a rivalry. Late in the game a fan jumps over the fence into the Yankees' bullpen.

As far as the baseball, in what was supposed to be Clemens last start at Fenway (but PEDs and lots more money made a joke of that notion), New York overcomes a 2-spot put up by Boston in the bottom of the 1st. The Yankees score runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings, then take the lead on Hideki Matsui's ground-rule double, and then Nick Johnson later scores on a double-play ball.

After order is restored, New York wins out as Clemens goes 6 innings, allowing 5 runs and 1 walk to go with 7 strikeouts. Martinez lasts 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs.
