Game Notes
Red Sox rally to beat the Yankees 9-6 and force a Game 7.
In a big-inning game, Boston gets the final 2 big, and important, innings. The Red Sox go up 4-1 after a 4-run 3rd, but lose the lead to New York when the Yankees score 4 in the bottom of the 4th. But trailing 6-4, the Red Sox regains the lead with 3 runs in the 7th and 2 more insurance runs in the 9th.
Boston's wild 7th is decisive. Nomar Garciaparra triples to lead off and then scores on Hideki Matsui's throwing error. Manny Ramirez doubles, advances on a wild pitch and scores when David Ortiz's hard grounder caroms off the 1st base bag for the tying run. Ortiz scores the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk to Johnny Damon by Felix Heredia.
Garciaparra breaks out of a series-long slump, going 4-of-5 with 2 runs scored and Ortiz drives in 3.
