Game Notes

Marlins steal the spotlight with a 4-3 win over the Yankees in extra innings.

With much fanfare and hype for Roger Clemens' first "last game" and a 9th inning rally by New York, it appeared to be a Yankees' night until Alex Gonzalez leads off the 12th with a solo HR to win it.

Florida riddled Clemens early, scoring 3 runs in the 1st before he settled down and lasted 7 innings. However, Carl Pavano was even better, allowing just 1 run through 8 innings. However, Ugueth Urbina lets the lead slip away in the bottom of the 9th, allowing a pair of runners before Ruben Sierra tripled them home. Bernie Williams, who collects 4 hits, scores on the play.

Florida, which had been stalled on 3 runs after the 1st inning, highlighted by Miguel Cabrera's 2-run HR, finally responds when Gonzalez drills a pitch from Jeff Weaver down the leftfield line over the wall.

Starting pitchers:
Yankees - Clemens
Marlins - Pavano
