Game Notes

Josh Beckett masters the Yankees as the Marlins capture their 2nd World Championship with a 2-0 win.

Starting on 3 days rest, Beckett blanks New York with a complete game, 5-hitter. Beckett pitches around leadoff hits to start the 7th and 8th innings. The 23-year-old right-hander allows 2 walks while striking out 9.

Even more impressive is that Beckett outdueled the Yankees' big-game pitcher Andy Pettitte, who also turns in a strong performance, but is undone by small ball and an error.

Speedsters Alex Gonzalez and Juan Pierre backup 2-out singles in the 5th, and then Gonzalez eludes Jorge Posada's tag to score on Luis Castillo's single to right, scoring from 2nd.

An inning later, Florida pads the lead when Jeff Conine reaches on an error by Derek Jeter. Conine moves up on Mike Lowell's walk, goes to third on Derrek Lee's bunt and scores on Juan Encarnacion's Sac Fly.
