Game Notes

Cardinals find relief and a 4-3 win over the Brewers.

St. Louis' bullpen retires all 12 batters it faces to help the Cardinals hold off Milwaukee and take a 2-1 lead in the series. A battle of aces between Cris Carpenter and Yovanni Gallardo quickly turns offensive, as St. Louis strikes for 4 runs in the 1st inning on the strength of RBI doubles by Joey Jay, Albert Pujols and David Freese.

However, Carpenter struggles to hold on to the cushion as the Brewers come back with 2 runs in the 2nd before a solo HR by Mark Kotsay in the 3rd makes it a 1-run game. Carpenter departs after 5 innings, with a quartet of relievers keeping Milwaukee at bay for the final 4 innings.
