Game Notes

Cardinals crush the Dodgers 12-2.

St. Louis erupts offensively early, despite losing leadoff hitter Vince Coleman in a freak pre-game accident with a tarp. Los Angeles' Jerry Reuss takes the brunt of the scoring damage, to fall to 0-7 in post-season play, allowing 5 hits and 7 runs while retiring only 5 batters to start the game.

After a scoreless 1st, the first 3 Cardinals in the second, tag Reuss with singles, with Tito Landrum, Coleman's replacement, capping the trio with a RBI single. Reuss trades a run for a groundout before walking Tom Nieto, and then he compounds his woes, bobbling a tapper back to the mound by John Tudor, allowing another run. Following an out, Ozzie Smith and Tommy Herr follow with RBI singles before Reuss departs.

St. Louis tags 4 more runs on the board before the inning is over, to take a 9-0 lead. Tudor then goes to work on the Dodgers' offense, being perfect until a 2-out walk by Steve Yeager in the 5th. Steve Sax leads off the 6th to breakup the no-hitter, and Bill Madlock leads off the 7th to break up the shutout.

Tudor finishes allowing 3 hits and 1 run in 7 innings. Landrum, meanwhile, delivers in Coleman's place, collecting 4 singles and 3 RBI. Jack Clark adds 3 hits, a walk, 3 runs and an RBI.
