Game Notes

Ozzie Smith, Cardinals leave the Dodgers stunned 3-2.

Smith is the unlikely provider of a walk-off HR, taking Tom Niedenfuer deep with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th to give St. Louis its 3rd straight win and series lead heading back to Los Angeles. Smith's game-winner is the 1st homer he had hit as a left-handed batter in his career.

The Cardinals had appeared to be en route to another walk away win as Fernando Valenzuela struggles early, allowing 2 straight walks to start the game before allowing a 2-run double to Tommy Herr before recording an out. Valenzuela struggles again in the 2nd before pitching out of trouble and settling down. He goes 8 innings, allowing just 4 hits, but walking 8.

The Dodgers tied the game in the 4th on Bill Madlock's 2-run HR off Bob Forsch. Forsch fails to make it out of the inning, but St. Louis' bullpen puts together 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk.
