Game Notes

Jack Clark, Cardinals stun the Dodgers 7-5.

St. Louis captures the NL Pennant when Clark delivers a devastating 3-run blast off Tom Niedenfuer with 2 outs in the top of the 9th. Los Angeles was basking in the glow of Mike Marshall's solo HR off Todd Worrell in the bottom of the 8th to take a lead and be on target to force a Game 7.

However, the wheels fall off for Niedenfuer for the 2nd game in a row, as Willie McGee singles with 1 out and Ozzie Smith walks. Niedenfuer is able to retire Tommy Herr on a groundout. With 1st base open, Tommy Lasorda opts to pitch to Clark rather than issue a walk, and take his chances against Andy Van Slyke. Clark then crushes Niedenfuer's pitch over the leftfield wall.

The Dodgers had jumped in front 4-1 against Joaquin Andujar. Bill Madlock follows a Sac Fly by Pedro Guerrero with a solo HR in the 5th to give Orel Hershiser a 3-run cushion. However, the Cardinals battle back, cutting the lead to 4-3 when McGee chases Hershiser from the game with a 2-run single in the 7th. McGee scores on Smith's triple off Niedenfuer.
