Padres push the Braves to the brink, 4-1.

San Diego's pitching shuts down Atlanta again to claim a 3-0 lead in the series. Sterling Hitchcock held the Braves to just 1 run in 5 innings despite walking 5 and giving up 3 hits. However, stranded runners would prove to be Atlanta's story, leaving 12 on as the Padres' bullpen finishes the job.

Hitchcock's seeing-eye single off Greg Maddux in the 5th set the table for San Diego to take a 2-1 lead when Steve Finley delivers a 2-out double and Ken Caminiti adds an RBI single. The Padres stretch the lead in the 8th when a 2-out walk to Wally Joyner proceeds a double by Cesar Hernandez, who takes 3rd on an errant throw and scores on a passed ball.
