Game Notes

Yankees power by the Padres for rally, 9-6 win.

Trailing 5-2, New York scores 7 in the 7th on a 3-run HR by Chuck Knoblauch and a Tino Martinez Grand Slam. San Diego staked Kevin Brown to a 5-2 lead as David Wells is less than sharp, but manages 7 innings, allowing a 2-run homer and a solo shot to Greg Vaughn and another 2-run HR to Tony Gwynn.

Brown goes 6 1/3 innings, before departing after allowing a single and a walk. However, the bullpen fails to protect the 3-run lead. Wall gives up a 3-run homer down the leftfield line to Knoblauch to start. After giving up a single to Derek Jeter, Mark Langston replaces Wall and gets an out but issues a pair of walks loading the bases for Martinez. Martinez takes his offering deep to rightfield.
