Game Notes

Yankees rally, then beat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings.

The Mets nurse a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th despite making enough mistakes on the bases to lose several games. Al Leiter calms the Yankees' attack, but Armando Benitez melts down in the 9th, allowing a single and successive singles to load the bases, setting the stage for Chuck Knoblauch's Sac Fly to send the game to extra innings.

The Yankees win it in the 12th when Tino Martinez singles with 1 out and Jorge Posada follows with a double to put runners in scoring position, after an intentional walk and retiring Luis Sojo, Turk Wendell gives up a single to Jose Vizcaino to end it.

Leiter pitched 7 strong innings, getting touched for 2 runs in the 6th on a 2-run double by Dave Justice. However, the Mets claim a 3-2 lead after wasting several scoring chances with bad or half-speed base-running when they break through against Andy Pettitte. Bubba Trammell ties it with a 2-run single and then Edgardo Alfonzo adds an RBI single.
