Game Notes

Braves batter the Cubs 13-4 in a contentious contest.

After an inning spent with Chicago manager Gene Michael arguing that Atlanta reliever Jim Acker was scuffing the ball, with an unnerved Acker walking the bases full before pitching out of it, the Braves break the game with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning. Acker had replaced Jeff Dedmon, making his 1st MLB start, and pitched Atlanta out of trouble after Andre Dawson's 2-run HR tied it 3-3.

After Dale Murphy's 2-run HR broke the tie in the bottom of the 4th, Michael makes repeated trips to demand Acker is inspected by umpires. After pitching out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation, Acker gets big backing by his teammates. The Braves load the bases against Jamie Moyer, with Paul Runge driving in 2 runs, and Gary Roenicke following with a 3-run HR. Roenicke has 3 walks, 4 runs, a 2-run HR and a 3-run HR.
