Chicago wins its 7th straight behind a strong effort by Rick Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe weathers a rocky 1st inning before pitching into the 9th, allowing 6 hits in 8 1/3 innings, leaving with a 5-1 lead and a pair of runners on base.

Philadelphia answers the Cubs' 1st inning run, with one of its own in the bottom of the 1st. Jerome Walton's Sac Fly off Floyd Youmans in the 4th breaks the tie and then Sutcliffe contributes to his own cause in the 5th. Vance Law doubles home Mark Grace and then Sutcliffe bloops a single into left scoring a pair of runs for a 5-1 lead.
