Cubs hang on for 5-4 win over the Phillies.

Chicago celebrates an Opening Day win after Mitch Williams pitches into and out of trouble in the 9th inning. Williams loads the bases with no outs before striking out Mike Schmidt, Chris James and Mark Ryal to earn the save. Schmidt had drawn Philadelphia within a run with a HR to lead off the 8th against Calvin Schiraldi.

The Cubs' lead had yo-yo'ed throughout. Andre Dawson's 2-run homer off Floyd Youmans in the 4th stakes Chicago to a 3-0 lead. However, Darren Daulton tags Rick Sutcliffe with a HR to lead off the 5th. Ryne Sandberg's RBI single pushes the lead to 4-1 before Ricky Jordan cuts the lead to 4-3 with a 2-run single in the 6th.

The Cubs extend the lead in an unusual way when Jeff Parrett's balk scores Shawon Dunston in the 6th for a 5-3 lead.
