Altanta erupts in the bottom of the 8th after Colorado's Roger Bailey blanked the Braves for 7 innings. Marvin Freeman hits Marquis Grissom with a pitch to start the inning. After a double to Chipper Jones and intentional walk to Fred McGriff, Ryan Klesko laces a single to right, scoring Grissom for the tying run and Jones for a controversial go-ahead run.

Jeff Reed is ruled to have missed Jones with his tag and the Jones goes back to touch home after missing the plate. Jay Lopez singles homes a pair of insurance runs.

John Smoltz earns his league-best 19th win going allowing 4 hits, 3 walks and 1 run while striking out 10.
