Red Sox slip by the Yankees 3-1.
Boston takes the 3rd game of a critical 4-game series with New York, to open a 5 1/2 game lead in the AL East by taking 2 of the 1st 3 games. The Red Sox break a 1-1 tie when Dwight Evans takes surprise starter Charlie Hudson deep to lead off the 8th. Boston tacks on another run on Larry Parrish's RBI double.
Hudson, starting only because a stomach ailment sidelined Tommy John, does a good job of slowing the Red Sox. However, Bruce Hurst matches and exceeds his performance, going the distance, allowing 3 hits while striking out 9. Hurst retires Don Mattingly, Dave Winfield and Jack Clark in order in the 9th to finish the victory.
