Game Notes

Yankees prevail over the Dodgers, 4-3 in 12 innings.

New York finally converts runners into runs when it abandons the bunt late in the game. After Paul Blair swings away following to unsuccessful bunt attempts, he slaps a base hit through the left side to score Willie Randolph, who led off with a double. The Yankees had runners to lead off the 10th and 11th innings, but saw the lead runners erased by perfect plays by Los Angeles catcher Jerry Grote when New York tried to advance the runners via the bunt.

It followed a pattern of rally-killers for the Yankees. New York broke a 2-2 tie when Thurman Munson doubles in Randolph to start the 8th, but the Yankees leave the bases loaded, failing to add insurance. It comes back to bite them in the 9th when Dusty Baker leads off with a single and then scores on Lee Lacy's pinch-hit single.

The late-inning drama caps a duel between Don Sutton and Don Gullett. Gullett struggles in the 1st, giving up a pair of runs by the time he records an out. But then settles down, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs in 8 1/3 innings before turning it over to Sparky Lyle. Sutton gives up a 1st-inning run and then blanks New York until Randolph's solo HR to start the 6th ties it.
