Orioles start fast, hold on for a 5-4 win over the Pirates in the opener.

Baltimore chases Brice Kison in the first inning, putting up 5 runs in the frame. After a single and a pair of walks load the bases, a throwing error by Phil Garner lets the 1st 2 runs score. Kison compounds the error with a wild pitch, allowing the Orioles to take a 3-0 lead before Doug DeCinces delivers a 2-run HR.

Meanwhile, Mike Flanagan cruises along until allowing a run in the 4th. Then Pittsburgh cuts deeper into the deficit when Garner singles home 2 runs after an error extends the inning. Willie Stargell draws the Pirates within 5-4 on a solo HR in the 8th.
