Toronto makes its post-season debut a celebration behind a stellar performance by Dave Stieb. Stieb blanks Kansas City for 8 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. The Royals avoid the shutout with a run off Tom Henke in the 9th.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays strike against Charlie Liebrandt early breaking through for a pair of runs in the 2nd. Ernie Whitt singles in the 1st run, and Tony Fernandez follows with a run-scoring single to deep short. Toronto chases Liebrandt in the 3rd, loading the bases with a double, walk and single to start the inning. Steve Farr enters and allows a pinch-hit single to Rance Mulliniks scoring one run, and then allowing a bases-loaded walk and Sac Fly.
